    Default Hello from ireland

Hi everyone, been looking around this great site a number of times and i am fascinated by the work some of you do. I'm a cabinet maker myself and have taken up woodturning as a hobby but still haven't got all the equipment needed to tackle larger projects. I've tried my hand at penturning and really enjoyed it. The only thing that bugs me is you guys have great access to some amazing kits and blanks to turn with. I've only done a couple of slimlines but would love to try other kits like the jr gent, or the 2 toned sierras. But what i'd love most is to be able to turn beautiful hollow forms, bowls and other stuff to the great craftamanship as you lot, keep up the great work, i have to say its a great inspiration to me

I haven't done any hollow forms at all yet, would love to just jump right in and be able to turn one but would probably get killed in the process

    Welcome from a Tyrone man!
    .
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

    Hi KK2007 ...and welcome!

if its inspiration your looking for, you don't have far to go. A gent from Ireland by the name of Liam Flynn does outstanding work.

Check out his work at: http://web.mac.com/flynnliam/iWeb/Site/Home.html

Plus there are plenty of blokes here that are very generous with thier information.

    Good luck with your endeavors.
    Cheers,
    Ed

See if there is a turning club in your area. Also, see if you can get your hands on Richard Raffans DVD, and Del Stubbs Bowl Making DVD....both are excellent aids
    Cheers,

It was the same situation for me in 2001 when I started with woodturning, no woodturning clubs where I live, so I had to figure it out all by myself, luckely I found some woodturning books in the local library, and the rest on the internet.

Hi again Keithkarl. Hard to say who the best supplier of burls is.

Try using the frorums specific to your topic to get info. E.g, Woodturning, penmaking, Timber Swaps etc.

    Cheers, artme.

Welcome KK. keep at it my friend, I started a short while ago and thought I would never get the hang of it but must admit I am improving and if I can do it, you can do it. to be sure.

    G'day KK,

Must be your lucky day. No one has said "begorrah" or any other pseudo Irishisms.

I haven't done any woodturning for a while, been too busy on other things. What I did back in 1986 on a visit back to England was to spend three days with Gordon Stokes. He had three pupils and told us we would not be taking a finished object away because the full three days was on technique. Best three days worth I have spent. I mention it because you may consider finding someone who is a skilled professional and taking a course. Incidently he concentrated on spindle work and was not satisfied until we could duplicate a piece by eye. His attitude to bowl turning was there are only two cuts to master. That part we did as an extra half day.
