Hello Western Melbourne

My name is Allen.

I've been playing with wood on and off most of my life, using my Dad's equipment I have dabbled in woodturning, and other small and simple projects. I really enjoy it, but renting in Melbourne's inner suburbs enter I never felt I had enough space to do my own work at home. Well I've cracked I'm 37, time to grow up and get my own workshop happening. So here I am. I am a rank newbie. For everything I think I know I am very happy to be corrected.

I am in the process of building/acquiring the tools and equipment I need. (At this stage my work bench is a large piece of mdf sitting on top of some milk crates.

P ) At this stage I am starting with things that don't require power because my workspace doesn't have any power outlets (Did I mention I rent).

I don't really know where this journey is going to take me. Right now apart from getting set-up I am looking at building some furniture for my wife and I (And family one day), and I'd like to use some nice joinery when I do. (I know this is going to be a steep learning curve)

Hi Allen,
Welcome to a top hang out place,
Don’t fret to much about having this or that tool yet, they will come.
An a piece of MDF on milk creates is better than nothing.
Start with small steps, an enjoy the journey, don’t worry about the destination,I’m 48 with know idea we’re I’m heading.

I am relatively new myself but like you and an based in Melbourne (western suburbs) and about the same age. I found getting started to just be the main thing. I would suggest look at building up a range of cordless tools that way as long as you charge your batteries inside, you can work anyway. Just try to stick to all the one brand so that the batteries are interchangeable and you can build up as you go. With a circular saw and a drill you will be able to get lots done.

Welcome to the forum Allen. Starting off at ground level will make you really appreciate all the tools as you acquire them. As you get into your projects you will start to learn which tools you really need now and which ones you can do without but plan for into the future.
