    Default Hey guys

    G'day folks,
I'm a brand newbie here as well as to woodworking, so thought I'd say g'day.....
I've been keen to delve into woodworking for a long while and in a way I guess I already have as I have knocked stuff together out of wood since I was a kid. Unfortunately knocked together about sums it up!! I've never had the room to set up any kind of workshop and I've never learnt any real skills.... but that is all about to change, my wife and myself have just been given the OK to purchase a small amount of acreage with enough workshop space to set myself up something good and on top of that there are a number of interesting projects that need to be undertaken in wood in the form of improvements to the house and a small holiday cottage that we are kitting out on the property, which I hope I will be able to tackle myself. There is no real rush to complete these, so I am hoping to learn some skills in order to undertake them myself, as part of the reason for us moving is to become more self reliant and sustainable.

Anyway enough waffling from me, I'm sure I'm going to have a whole bunch of newbie style questions in the near future and any advice will be gratefully recieved.

I thought to start out I would give some thought to the tools I will require in order to set up a workshop, I have some power tools already including an drop saw, a couple of decent sanders (belt and orbital) a jigsaw, drill and a few other bits and pieces.....I am sadly lacking in hand tools though, so thought I should get saws (panel, tennon and dovetail), some planes, a set of beveled wood chisels and some measuring and marking out tools??

Any other suggestions? the first project I'm looking at is making some saw horses and maybe some frames for paintings.

    Cheers
    Andy M

    Welcome to the forum.

My woodworking is a hobby along with fishing. Now for fishing you only need a couple of hooks, line, rod and reel. The only other expense is bait. If you want to hit a certain species of fish or do some different type of fishing then the expence rises.

This is the same for woodworking. I started with only a few tools. I still only have a few tools. I find that it is better to only purchase something that is going to be used then to purchase something that is going to be used in some time by some time. Now that I have said that it is hard to practics what I am preaching. I do keep an eye out for the specials.

    Welcome Andy!
    .
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

    Regards, Woodwould.
