Thread: Hi all, I'm Priscilla in Melbourne

Welcome aboard Priscilla, enjoy the journey. I too found my love of timber in the woodwork room at school in NZ, my woodwork teacher was a grumpy old barstard with an contrasting sense of humour and only 6 fingers and two thumbs whom I still remember fondly.

You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.

FenceFurnitire will be there, he is a great source of knowledge for quality hand tools and a good photographer too. I hope there will be a lot of tools and timber for swap or sale

It will be a good occasion to swap and share knowledge and skills. As I mention in the thread, Im hoping individuals will bring their tools along and do some work, bringing tools is not a must but the more we have doing stuff the more it will add to the atmosphere.

Turning Wood Into Art

Hi there. Your furniture sounds great. I love wood joints and drool over japanese joinery. (Although I'd suggest good ol' pva would do the job of gluing quite well without resorting to epoxy. ) O do mainly wood turning. Anyway. Looking forward to seeing your stuff. I am in Belgrave so if you ever need a drive give me a hoy.

I too love Japanese joinery, my workmate recently loaned me a book on the art of it and wow, those joins look like puzzles with all their intricacy and antiquity, i'll have a crack at them one day.
I havn't used a lathe since school so that is an area I will eventually get to, while at the woodworking show a couple years back, I was in awe to see these really old lathes powered by push bikes! These men were lined up riding bikes that drove their machines while making small whistles. although they were made within minutes and looked techncally crap, a man gave me a whistle he made and to this day, it is still one of the coolest things I have.
I am in FTG so would love to swap notes and check out your work one day

Ah! Ferntree gully. I go to the knox Woodworkers cos I can't have all the tools I need in my shed. And I get to talk to other woodworkers. Turning is on Monday morning. Come on down and have a go.

thanks for your message, the get-together sounds fantastic!
I would love to come along.
that is Exactly what I am looking for on this site, not only read and learn from peoples work and threads on line but also to meet more woodworkers, admire each others tools, share ideas, buy/trade timber/tools and basically talk forever about this craft!
Being female I cant really talk to my friends about woodworking, carpentry or tools/machinery (and I am cool with that), and talking with my work mates only gets me so far. I can literally talk forever about tools, timber, techniques and experiences and have so many ideas and questions that only other woodworkers can truly understand and discuss with me.
I also find it somewhat boring and difficult to use a computer to explain and share my work and ideas, not to mention it takes me forever to use a computer (esp when I'd rather play with my tools). I would rather read the computer instead.
I think I need to post something asking people in SE Melbourne if there are regular meetings I can go to.

Knox Woodworkers?! Sounds interesting, this is probably a really stupid question but what do they there? Like, I am looking to meet with other woodworkers to admire tools, share ideas, learn new techniques etc, is Knox Woodworkers that kind of meeting? I'd like to come monday but work gets in the way
