    Default Hi from Newbie Woodworker

    Hi All,

    I'm a newbie woodworker looking forward to easing my way into the hobby by making a few small good quality projects from articles in magazines like Australian Woodsmith etc.

    I would really appreciate some feedback on this. The above mentioned magazine often has plans for projects using 19mm thick plywood. All the pictures show the finished edges of the projects being smooth and without gaps where some of the internal laminate is missing.

    My limited understanding is that the only way to achieve this is to use AS standard marine ply but the price is prohibitive. Does anyone on the forum know if there is any other grade of plywood that can be used so that flat edges can be produced without the need for filling the sawn edges before sanding??

    Also I would like to know if there is anywhere in W.A. where such plywood can be purchased (preferably in Bunbury but Perth OK if need be)?

    Welcome to the forum CC. I usualy get mine from Mr Ply & Wood, guess they are in WA too. They have quite a few different grades and price ranges. Sometimes you can pick up seconds where they have a fault in the sheet somewhere but most of the sheet is good.

    Welcome to the forum. Can't help as to where you can buy timber in your part of the woods but all in all, good timber is quite expensive. When I work with cheap ply and the edges are as you say, I usually apply (screw or glue) a solid 19mm pine edging to the ply and this overcomes the problem of rough edges but of course some projects don't lend themselves to this method. you can use any timber to edge the ply with of course but I find pine does the job and the cheapest.
