G'Day, Welcome to a top forum Trudi.
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork.
There are quite a few forum members from the Newcastle area who might be able to help with timber sources.
    Cheers, crowie

    Welcome to the forum.

No timber in Newcastle, now that is strange, maybe they sent this all to Sydney.

    Hi Takart, and welcome aboard.

As already stated, there are MANY Forumites in the Newcastle area (there is also a current post about a get together at my place with Dai Sensai (moderator/traveller/woodturner etc etc) for members on Sat Feb 9th if interested.

Carving: There are a few carvers who meet on a Friday at the Woodturners of the Hunter, along with boxmakers. The guy who runs the boxmaking is a very talented carver.

Timber: The Woodturners also sell timber. There are also some suppliers around the area, but you would not find them on the internet.

    Cheers, Paul

Welcome, Trudi, hope you enjoy this site. I'm in Newcastle area too, Mayfield, to be specific, & my main interest in woodworking is making folk harps (please see my intro thread). I only started this at age 66 a few years back, so there's always room for late starters!
I'd love to get a bit of that Norfolk pine & silky oak, if there's any more, or you can spare some.
Also, I'd like to try having carvings in low relief on the sides of my harps - they're long & narrow -(550 or 750 -odd mm x 90 mm -depending on the model). I'll try to attach a photo. So far, I've deco'ed some with hot poker work.
I think meranti or Pacific maple (actually from one of several rainforest trees in SE Asia) would suit woodcarving too.

    'Bye,
