    Default Hoping to find the magic again

    Hi, everyone

    My name is Ash and I live in the 'burbs of Brisbane's northside (Albany Creek). Thirty five years ago at school I loved woodwork class (thanks, Mr Tor) and was pretty good at it too - I still have a side table that (like it's owner) looks like an antique My job has me working with computers and in meetings all day but what I really want is to smell sawdust again and relive that experience where you nail a good dovetail.

    My retirement plan (6 years away) was to put together a workshop and chase the glory days of high school woodworking class but my wife told me I was mad not to start now (thanks, Wifey). I'm starting to slowly put together some good quality gear in the garage that I hope will give me decades of good service and I'm at the point where I need to connect with other like minds to get some inspiration. Thank you Woodwork Forums!

    There seems to be SO much information in the forums and I'll be looking to chase down some project ideas, tips and, perhaps, opportunities to meet up with others in Brisbane.

    There are a stack members around Brisbane and cross South East Queensland plus the rest of the country.....
    You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
    Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.

    Isn't it strange, there are two consistencies with us 50-ish's who take up woodwork:

    -- First, EVERYONE remembers the name of the woodworking teacher in highschool
    -- Second, almost everyone is from IT....

    Good idea to start/plan early.

    I rediscovered wood working in a bigger way about 8 years before I retired. at that time I had planned to work for considerably more than 8 years but I ended up enjoying myself so much I retired early and have not regretted it. Since I retired I have also expanded into metal work, electronics and 3D printing

    Make sure you have enough space. About 2 years before I retired I found I had too much gear and not enough space so I doubled the size of my shed and spent a fair bit of time fitting it out so that when I did retire I was able to get into it.

    I didn't enjoy the ~3 months of woodwork I did at school, but as an almost-50, I too am building a hobby/space for impending retirement!

    Nah; it’s easy to tell them apart. We have Mountain (space) Ash; and Mountain (underscore) Ash.

    Saying that, if (underscore) Ash also answers to “Julian” then that could cause a bit of confusion…
