New and keen

G'Day all, my name's Matthew, and I've been wood turning for the last couple of months.

Graduated in that time from a Supercheap Rockwell to a Woodfast 305 lathe, and that's been enough to turn a passing interest into something I really enjoy doing.

Cheers in advance for any tips/tricks and advice that I'll no doubt be asking for in the very near future.

There are a heap of members in and around Melbourne..
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP photos with build notes.

Welcome to the forum, nice work on picking up a M305. im looking at doing the same. How do you find it in compared to your old lathe?

Thank you all, I'm very much looking forward to sharing photos of my handi-work (and even the harshest critique will be taken on board!)

And Delbs, the first lathe was a Rockwell model bought at Supercheap auto (there's a hidden message there I think! and a lesson learnt), which I took back and exchanged twice before biting the bullet and shelling out for a more expensive but completely reliable Woodfast. Best thing I've done so far!

Don't let Delbs anywhere near that m305. It might be liberated! He's on the hunt!

It's a wonderful machine. I love my 305. Looking for a chuck this fortnight, something like a supernova.

My only thought though, and this is trivial, is a variable motor would be nice. Not nice enough to warrant an extra $620 mind you, but nice (maybe when I'm rich)

I was turning a big hunk of firewood and the speed variability would have really helped.

Fear not with getting burnt on a purchase. There are many blackened and scorched fingers here.

I have had mine for quite a while and am very happy
with it.
