    Hi,
    I am completely new to wood turning and after much research have just purchased a lathe (woodfast M305) and looking forward to it arriving! In advance I hope you don't mind but I shall be pestering you alot with some very stupid questions probably!! well thats the intro over so now I need help with tool selection and chucks for the complete novice (never put steel to wood before) hence, all help much appreciated !!!!

    Dean your welcome here we are all in the same pot but like yourself learn we need each other

    There's no silly/stupid questions here...........as for the answers

    Now to tools this is dependant on $$$$ yours of course
    Chisles/gouges are for beginners best bought HSS 9High speed steel) they can be as cheap as $50 a set of maybe 6 to as dear as you like for just 1 name brand. Chucks same thing H&F have some for around $80, Nova are good over $160 and the go up from there.

    Welcome mate, this is a great site! It'll be better now that you're here! Most important tool for a turner... a decent pair of safety glassed. Or better still (IMHO) a mesh or acrylic face guard. I use a mesh one that I got as a "bonus" with my latest chainsaw purchase.

    gday you will enjoy turning I have that exact lathe its a great starters lathe. As a learner my self I found it great, I did buy their 4" chuck for mine I will get the attachments for the chuck as I need them. But that was after a good play withit. If you were closer to me as I live out the northern susburbs you could come over & have a try. I started with a basic tool set a roughing gouge, 2 spindle gouges, a parting tool, a skew chisel and a scraper. I love it
