Welcome aboard Rod. Beautiful part of the world you are from. I would love to get to your wood show one year. Last time I was up that way I called in to visit the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild at Montville. What a fantastic club they have there.
I hope the lathe works out for you. They are a very similar design to the one I have and it has served me well. It's not a Vicmarc, but neither is the price.

You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.

I have a lathe or two and have found I have got much better value from a second hand one than new. You might find a better second hand lathe for the same dollars with a range of accessories, Thats my thoughts. If I had several thousand to spare I would get myself a vicmark or two

If you have a look at the Market Place on this forum you'll see that good quality used wood lathes are regularly advertised in the Market Place, and they often come with some accessories making them a good buy. If you can't see what you're looking for right now, I suggest you place a Wanted Add in the Market Place. You never know what's out there until you ask.

I'd also suggest that you get in touch with the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (http://www.blackallrangewoodies.org.au). They are located on the Montville Sports Ground, not far from you. They're open every morning (except Sundays) between 8:00am and midday, with Friday mornings being their dedicated wood turning days. They are also open Saturday mornings for what they call "general woodworking". Friday morning are probably your best chance to talk to lots of other turners Talk to them about buying used wood lathes. Try out some of their lathes (they have around 6 lathes I think), and that will give you a good idea of what to look for when looking for a wood lathe.
