Firstly welcome.

Just a heads up that like the USA, many Australian's and lots of folks on this forum may not have much anglophile sympathy. Even many Australians with anglo connections i(usually in the distant past) may have less than what you might consider anglophilic tendencies especially when it comes to sport. England is probably even the greatest enemy when it comes to cricket and rugby.

The fact that the majority of Aussies did not vote for a republic in the republic referendum is IMHO more of a reflection of the lack of a clear alternative than anything else.

I don't know how avid the Australians are for sport, but from reading some and quizzing an English ex-pat on the subject, I'd guess the Brits are more addicted than the Americans. Perhaps its because the games we have here are all outliers--American "football," baseball, and basketball. Personally, the only game I enjoy watching us Yanks play is golf, and we both know where that originated!

I'm sure there is a list of subjects to avoid here, so I'll just say that the United States must have dropped sadly in the estimation of the global community in recent years. I was just discussing with my husband whether Canada, or one of the southern European countries, might let us in if things don't turn around soon! I hadn't thought of Australia or New Zealand as a place to hide out! Right on--that could be a more valuable suggestion than how to get my anti-splinter insert sorted. ;-D

Thank you, Crowie. Writing to Aussies always makes me smile, because you're on the exact opposite side of the globe from me.

I will love sharing pics when I get to making something in it's own right (first I'm cutting some substrates for assemblage art projects and getting the tools my Dad left me serviced and oiled). I'm an arty sort all around, so I don't know what my first woodworking project will be. However, I can't wait to find out!

I wouldn't say baseball and basket ball are outliers as they (especially basketball) are pretty much a worldwide these days. Here in Oz we have state teams and a championship in both those sports. We also have our own almost state based local and state Aussie Rules football matches which draw close to 100,000 spectators at finals and some say is an unofficial Aussie religion so that's how serious some folks take it. Not that I'm interested in sports as such. Some 20 years ago before the era of large screen TVs we bought a large screen video projector aiming for me to get out of the shed and relax watching some sports or the odd movie with my other half. I think I watched half an Aussie rules final and a couple of movies and that was about it.

It's interesting to hear about folks in the US trying to escape to another country. When we lived in the US in the late 1980's, folks there couldn't understand why we wanted to get back to Oz - as surely it was much better in the US. As for bent politics etc don't worry, IMHO its just as bad here but maybe not so much in your face as the US.

Anyway I'm sure you will find plenty of helpful members in these forums.

Not sure where their at with it but the Canadians are building a wall to keep US refugees out.

Apparently they won’t assimilate and they carry a lot of guns.
We don’t have a wall here, the oceans work better and if you dare to come by boat we lock you up for an indefinite amount of time to drive you crazy. It’s ok though if you fly.
We do get the odd visit from Liz and Phil the Greek. I last caught them in Canberra for the opening of the big house on the hill. Bob was running the joint then but he’s just carked it.
Ive visited and worked with a few American Woodies and they are so much more sharing and hospitable than a few of the English ex Royal College types I’ve had to work with here in Oz. They’ve all had a rather sad we’re here to show those colonial clods how it’s done attitude. Unfortunately we are so cringeworthy we don’t bounce them across the continent As was done to Krenov when he tried that stunt on the East Coast of the US of A.

Hi Sue, all funny reading. I was nearly thrown overboard from an Alaskan cruise ship recently when I tried to explain why Yanks can't understand Cricket. Well you have nominated the US, but which of the 50 states are you in.
