Default New member- student at ANU wood workshop.

    Hi all,

    my name is Chris.

I am in my second year of study at the furniture workshop at the Australian National University in Canberra.
I have been a long time lurker and felt its about time I got involved in the community.

My interests are tool making, furniture making, exotic and rare wood species. I feel these aren't uncommon interests around these parts.

Looking forward to having some chats and exchanging ideas.

    cheers

    Default Hello Chris

    Hey Chris,

Welcome to forums. Some interesting stuff here, well worth using the search function to find things in previous threads and discussions.

What sort of a degree will you end up with ? B. Sc B.A ? Something else ?

Am curious, and would like to hear a bit about the course from a participant rather than the Uni web pages.

Is there a heavy emphasis on practical work ? What are exams like ? is it something like "Make an interesting wardrobe - you have 3 days - your time starts now" or " Discuss the various pros and cons of Blackwood over King Billy Pine for furniture making"

    Hi Bill,

The degree is offered at the ANU school of art, I am going for a bachelor of visual arts but you can also do a bachelor of design.

The course work is primarily practice based. We are given a brief, we then respond to brief using our own design ideas and techniques. For example, our brief recently was titled elevated surfaces which was a very open brief. I crafted a coffee table emulating neo classical architecture. Our projects usually last a month or two or they can last the whole semester. So you have plenty of time to get things done.

Theoretical work is generally focused on furniture history or wood science, it may sound boring but I find it to be the most valuable part of the degree.

hope I've answered some of your questions.

    cheers,

    chris

    Hey Chris,

Welcome to the forum! Do you use ANU machinery mostly for your projects?

Please tell us all about the place and the course and the facilities. Some pics would be great too. You realise that you are attending what some of us would consider to be woodworking nirvana, and we want to be immersed in it.

Does it teach you important practical things like finishing, or are you on your own ?

Hope you have the time to oblige. Would love some pics of your works too, even WIP.
    regards,

    Dengy
