Thread: NEW WOODWORKER (NUMPTY)

Hi,

I am new to woodworking although I do have a few (not wonderful) tools. A couple of Circular saws, numerous drills but no pedestal drill, a drop saw and a Triton Work Centre that I have yet to set up. I actually gave it to my son-in-law and he never used it so I "borrowed it back.

I am reasonably comfortable doing less detailed work (fences, scotias, archtraves etc) as I am currently in the throes of a major home renovation. It was while doing this work that I thought it was time I gained a bit more skill and some better tools so that I could fill in my time more productively during my retirement later this year.

I have a couple of jobs coming up that seem to be an ideal way to introduce myself to the use of a router - and give me an excuse to actually buy one. I think I will probably go with the Triton mid range plunge router as it seems to be sufficient for now and the future needs. I want to get a Triton MFO001 but they are just on $NZ500 here so it looks like I need to try and source one from Oz. I spotted a couple of nice 2nd hand ones but none where the seller will ship to New Zealand. I have to cut some hinge pockets for doors I am replacing- I guess a jig is in my future!, and also have to make a vanity top to customise a shop bought vanity carcass. My wife wants a "rustic" dining table for the new house and has a photo of the design but can't find a ready made example so this will be my upcoming major project once I feel a bit more confident. I am still trying to find some plans I can use but if all else fails I will have to "wing it"

I do have the advantage that my son-in-law has his own company making stage sets and sets for things such as motor company model launches and he seems to have every tool imaginable and does excellent work. If a get really stuck or need access to a tool that I don't have I am sure I can talk him into coming to the party.
