get a slightly wider gate and mount it on an angle so the gas meter is either all outside or all inside the gate.
Provided the gas company can read the numbers, they wont care.

having the gate angle into the drive -- roughly along the diagonal line in the concrete path -- would, in my opinion, look the best

I'd recommend checking on the position of the gas pipe. I wouldn't be surprised if it runs directly beneath your proposed fence line.

As suggested by Ian you could either angle the gate or follow the path before returning near the window. Unfortunately it only looks like a 900mm path but it would have been good if you could have come off the wall the width of the meter before starting the gate so that the meter is hidden.

SJM's comments are very valid and worth considering before going too far.

Good point... that has given me options... might make "box" for the gate after the meter... Will check for the gas lines as well water.

Had that trouble with a water pipe. Checked first with the water authority before putting in a corner post and went through it with fencing bar. The authority tried to charge for repair but was able to point out that their pipe had a kink in it and didn't go where they said it went.
Once you check it's their responsibility.

ps that said, you'll find that their workers often don't trust their plans anyway.

Plans are sometimes little more than a convenient fiction. When I did some excavating near a buried telephone line, the worker traced it with a sensor and spray painted the ground above. Similar sensors for other utilities.
