Default Improving my dust collection using the Dust Commander (1/3rd price o fDust Deputy

Watched this youtube vid on how to convert your Triton Dust bucket into a cyclone using 15ltr paint tin lids.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqHmwiykabw

Found this guy with Dust Commanders and asked for a combined shipping price for 3 @ $60 each
DUST COMMANDER DLX ESD - High performance cyclone filter element/dust collector | eBay

I was expecting to pay about $200

    He quoted:
3 x DUST COMMANDER DLX for the price of $100 AU
Plus unRegistered shipping of $27 AU
    ===========================================
    TOTAL of $127 AU
    ============================================
I confirmed a number of times and found no reason NOT to order so ordered.

I successfully found a professional painter willing to give me 3 15 ltr recently used paint tins with the hinged sealing clamps.

This is what I got from Dust Commander (including a gasket and some screws and washers:

Leaving the lid on the paint can is easer to work with:
    IMG_8516.jpg

Using a ruler I just found the widest distance across.
    Makerd around the centre
    moving 90% did it again.
    IMG_8520.jpg

Using one of those gold plated drill bits I drilled the centre hole
    IMG_8518.jpg

Found my 3" / 76mm hole saw and used it to mark the circle
Otherwise a 3" metal hole saw is about $70 with arbor.
    IMG_8519.jpg

2 thin metal cutting jigsaw blades for $13
    IMG_8521.jpg

    MUST WEAR SAFETY GOGGLE HERE!
I got hit in the goggles with flying metal bits a dozen times.

Very nice arch to start with
    IMG_8522.jpg

finished hole - doesn't need to be prefect
    IMG_8525.jpg

find off the sharp edges now so wont be cut in the future
    IMG_8526.jpg

No pic here of lining up the template for the screw holes on the bottom of the lid facing up.
Taped across the hole to hold the template in place.
Turned the lid over and drilled the screw holes.

    Testing the fit.
    IMG_8527.jpg

Making sure the gasket is in place
I was going to replace the gasket with something more substantial.
But decided to see how making the minimal effort would turn out.
    IMG_8529.jpg

No pics here of lining up the lid holes with the dust commander holes.
Power drilling the screws in loosely unit all 4 are in.
Then tightening all four and checking for any gaps.

Successfully fitted the paint lid to the triton bucket
    IMG_8530.jpg

Got lucky and found in my stash a PCV angle reducer
    40mm x 42°
Got 6 more to use on the three dust commanders and saved this one.
Got them from Tait Timber Home Harware.
Couldn't be bothered going to Bunnings again.
    Masters sold out long ago.
    IMG_8531.jpg

Wrapping the fat end with electrical tape 3 times ( not 2 - not 4 )
was a perfectly snug fit in either of the portals.
(1 gaffer tape wraps was too loose. 2 gaffer tape wraps was too tight.)
And the Triton dust hose was a perfect fit the the skinny end.
Told you I got luck. That never ever happens.
    IMG_8537.jpg
    IMG_8533.jpg

Pic of the Triton Dust Bucket before replacing it.
    IMG_8534.jpg

The Dust Commander on top of the Triton Dust bucket would just NOT fit.
So decided to try the paint bucket instead.
Lucky again. I don't know what's going on!
    IMG_8535.jpg

For the life of me, I can't remember why I decided to move to the Triton bucket with the paint lid.
Using the paint buckets, I now have 3 SPARE Triton Dust Collection Buckets.
And no paint buckets to throw out.
    IMG_8536.jpg
    IMG_8532.jpg

I have to say the without the vacuum cleaner bags in the vacuums,
AND without the Triton Dust Bucket filter,
the pressure I'm getting thru the Dust Commander is amazing!

    Almost forgot to mention:
While testing with the Triton dust bucket,
I held my had over the hose novel cutting off the air intake,
    and the Triton bucket buckled.
Removed the my hand and the bucket expanded back into place.

The Dust Commander on top of the paint tin is top heavy.
will have to make a holder on wheels like on Pinterest teaching for cyclone.
    So many plans.

    Really happy with the outcome.

Going to stop for the day and bask and revel in the good luck I had building all three successfully.

I did the same but used the triton dust bucket by machining a new lid out of craft wood and routing a grove for it to fit over the top of triton bucket .

    Hi Barry

I purchased a Dust Commander about a year ago. I already had a Dust Deputy (attached to a Fein VC), however I needed a unit that was anti-static, which these black versions are designed to be. This was for a Festool vac, which requires this - the basic Dust Deputy is not static free, and this has been reported to create problems with Festool vacs. Note that all fittings and the hose also need to be static free to work this way.

The container for the Dust Commander is a 15 lt plastic brewing vat that seals with a screw top. I began with a 20 lt container, but the suction of the Festool vac is so strong that it sucked in the walls. These containers are available on eBay.

It is attached to a sustainer, which can be removed ...

The other end of the hose ...

    Regards from Perth

Ahh yes, the latest iteration of the dust commander is a direct steal from the original Chinese developer/manufacturer of these small cyclones. This French guy made enough changes (none affecting the performance) so it can't be considered a copy. Yeah that's right, a European stole a design from the Chinese! There's a turn-up!

The Chinese developer has since moved on to make some further improvements to his design, but was he stroppy when his biggest European retailer stole his design? You bet he was!

It would be wonderful if Mr Chinese were to develop a version for the big pipe users

I've just starting the move to 150mm pipe and a cyclone using 150 in/out would be wonderful.

By chance I saw Dust Deputy that does this, but it was fearsome in cost to bring here

I've actually been meaning to go take a look at the Hare and Forbes cyclone separator as that has a 6" outlet but twin 4" inlets. The 4" Y connector looks like it's connected to a 6" pipe but it doesn't say in the catalogue.

    It's called competition.

I think Carba tec is the only one registered on the Dust Deputy website who stocks them in Aus.

I was looking for a larger one for my 4" not 6".
Was going to just pack some sealer strips to reduce my 4" down.
I could swear I did see someone else doing it.
    But haven't tried it yet.
Might have to order a couple more.
    Thanks,

Here we are: Super Dust Deputy XL 3-5HP Cyclone Separator - #AXD002030AXL | Oneida Air Systems, Inc.

Its both 6" in and out. A nice barrel underneath my new (to come) Timbercon DC-1750 (https://www.timbecon.com.au/extracti...dust-extractor) and it would be a nice solution.

There is nothing worse than emptying bags.

Ive the little Dust Deputy for the Festool shopvac, which for the router, sander and circ saw is excellent. It makes the whole collect-and-dispose process so easy - it becomes trivial.

Aldav, prod your Chinese mate to import a few of his!

The twin 100mm inlet can be removed and leaves a 6" inlet

That's weird, I wonder if they've changed the design on the Super Dust Deputy? The Carbatec picture is different and the inlet is 5" with a 6" outlet.

    https://www.carbatec.com.au/dust-con...-73-cm-no-drum

Edit: Cheers scuz! Sounds like the Hare and Forbes could be a go, with their regular 15% off sale it would only come to like $330 and includes the bucket and all fittings.
