Axle length query
Hi all,
I'm in the process of designing a camper trailer to build. I've built a few box trailers before but always just used 14" holden rims so that was never an issue. My question is this
1. I've acquired 3 * 16x6" steel pajero rims (they'll do for now) and from what I can calculate they have a 60mm offset with a distance of 150mm from the edge of the rim to the back of the hub mount. Given that, I've calculated I need a 1700mm (67") axle with a 1200 wide trailer? Does that sound right?
2. If wanted to put 7" rims on it in the future there shouldn't be a problem if I stayed with 16" Pajero rims?
Any help would be much appreciated.Have a nice day - Cheers

Hey WB, long time no hear.
I prefer not to use the term "Offset" when trying to measure up wheels and tyres for trailers as everyone seems to have their own ideas about what the term means. It's fine if eveybody's on the same page, but confising when they're not.
So, when measuring up for an axle length required for a trailer, I use 3 measuements;- Chassis width. (pretty straight forward)
- Inside of tyre edge to hub face. (this allows the calculation of clearance from tyre to chassis)
- Overall tyre width. (this will allow the calculation of the guard width, and in conjunction with #2 above, allow adjustment of the axle length to move the outside of the tyre to be level with these guards, or to change the guard width to suit any future wheel and tyre changes)
With Pajero's wider rims, the extra width is added to the outside, so you'll be OK with your inside tyre clearance when you do change them.
Hope this helps.Too many projects, so little time, even less money! Are you a registered member? Why not? click here to register. It's free and only takes 37 seconds! Doing work around the home? Wander over to our sister site, Renovate Forum, for all your renovation queries.

Thanks Yonnee. It has been a while but I'm sticking my head in a bit more often now.
I might go with the 66" as I would rather have a bit more room to fit larger rims at a later date. Once I get started I'll put some piccies up to show.Have a nice day - Cheers
