I have a new Vehicle (Tesla Model Y) and have had a Tesla Tow package installed.
It's very well made and nicely tucked in behind the rear bumper like this.
The trailer chain attachment points are the black panted steel plate above the socket.

When not in use a plastic insert covers the hole to restore it's standard low drag coefficient. Aerodynamics.

Getting the pin in is relatively easy but attaching the chain/shackle has a very high degree of difficulty especially once the hitch is inserted.

Does anyone know if it would be to code to weld a couple of 10mm plate gussets with a hole in them to the tow bar like this and attach the chain to them.

The welding would be done by my BIL, a certified/ticketed welder with 50 years experience.

Vehicle tow rating is 1.8 to,n hitch rating is 2.25 T. But the most I would be towing is an 8x5 single axle trailer with a 750kg limit.
