What is correct?
I have just added a new axle and springs to beef up the load capacity of the trailer.
I replaced the axle the way I found it but since have seen 3 trailers with the axle over the spring. ie the axle above the spring with spring help "up" by the U bolts. I thought the way I've done it makes more sense as the load is sitting on the axle with the U bolts simply holding it in place rather than carrying the load - what is correct?

Not sure about correct but the engineering firm that built me a box trailer for me had no issues about swapping my axle to the underside of the leaf springs so that the trailer was more level on my high tow ball.

There is no incorrect way for a straight beam axle to be mounted. It all comes down to ride height, guard clearance and spring camber. Seeing as you've only got a 750Kg rated axle, having the U-bolts hold this weight is not a problem.

I'd be more worried about the 7 leaf spring being a little stiff, as the minimum rating on a 7 leaf spring is over 1000Kg.
