Yes Im the poor bugger that will have to remove the exhaust if ever needed... nah its actually not that hard... unclamps easily into 4 sections.
It is rubber mounted also. There is 20mm thick rubber on the bottom of those mounts.
the led pattern on now i am not a fan of, was just trying them out. i have 4 other patterns to try before deciding. or did you mean a whole different style of light?
Also can someone please tell me how all this timber would weather? i would love a polished timber floor much more than the checkerplate... but not if i have to rip it off every 12 months... also it may catch fire being that close to hot muffler? atleast the ally acts as a massive heat sink...

The wood will need to be weather resistant like western red cedar(like cedar window frames on houses)if the ute spends most of its time outdoors, if it is kept indoors/shaded most of the time just about any hardwood will do.
The type finish you choose will effect the maintenance schedule of it, for a varnished look a marine spar varnish will be the go it should last several years in full sun. But it will involve a large amount of work to refinish it down the track ie complete strip off and recoat.
Or you could go for a oiled finish, durability is not great for full sun but will be ok if the ute is kept under cover, best thing with oil is how easy it is to redo your tray would take about 1/2hr to do maybe once a year or longer if not exposed to weather constantly.
If it were me I'd be looking for a dark coloured wood like fire charred red gum which would look #### hot with the smokey black XR colour:)
You would need to heat that exhaust up constantly for ages without moving the car too burn the wood(extended dyno session...), if your worried some insulation inbetween will work wonders.

Look up for some tray liner kits to see how its done... you should like them as there's some stainless stripping involved!

I can enjoy your work efforts.
If I can contribute some ideas - radius the front and back corners of the tray and whaterver inlay you choose.
Also radius the outside corners near the tailights. Dont recess the number plate.
The tail lights themself I dont dig, maybe the stock tailights upside down and swapped sides.
Maybe show off your stainless work with some tie downs on the top sides of the RHS.
I know the idea is just a standout ute to show off your business name. But I think showing off your stainless work should be a big part.
Maybe if you choose timber inlay, you can put staineless ribs in between each piece of timber. Dark timber and stainless ribs would really stand out.
Looking at your shop you do some sign work. Maybe your pyramid joke is not so bad. How about a stainless pyramid sign box, I cant think how to describe it except shaped like a Toblerone chocolate, hahaa.

ok time for an update :)
Over the weekend i have lovered the rear muffler around 25mm and now its mounted on nolathane rather than the heavily compressed rubber. Doing this has allowed me to remove the spacers and drop the whole tray down 20mm...
A few weeks ago i blew over the steel work in matt black just as an undercoat.
However, I have decided to go back to the drawing board... I have listened to all of your ideas and decided Im going with the stainless round tube for the frame and a timber floor.
One addition to the timber floor will be I will put it up in the CNC Router and engrave my logo into it. Then I will have my logo laser cut from stainless steel to drop into where the timber was routed out.
Thoughts, comments appreciated :) You all have been very helpfull and i do enjoy your feedback good or bad. I said i wasnt scared to start again if it didnt turn out as expected, and now im starting again.
Not that there is anything wrong with current project. I will still finish it off with paint job, roll bars and some tie downs and sell it off after new one is finished.
Ill have some AutoCAD concept pics up of new design soonly :)

Not really keen on the tube under the tray on the sides... looks a bit too busy for me but maybe with the cab in front it would be different. Modelling in 3d in autocad isn't too much harder than drawing 2d once you figure out the basics :wink:
I think tunna trays are definitely a case where less is more. One of the very few trays I have seen that I felt looked right was just a rhs frame with a jarrah tray and thin tail/stop/indicator lights set in the frame at the back. Can't remember how the numberplate or head board was though. It was a HZ which as others have said are a bit of an easier starting point.
The inset logo sounds trick.

i have seen some basic trays as you describe and yes they do look neat. Im just not a fan of all the chassis and stuff showing :no: so im trying to step outside the square a bit.
That was just a 5 minute sketch just to sort of explain what I was talking about.
Got that idea from Harry72 and just added to it.
So it sounds like you have done some cad work yourself :) i have done some basic 3d but not with radi or bends. how bout i send you the .dwg and you can 3d it for me haha :2tsup:
