    Default hydraulic Brake setup

I recently bought an old 8 x 5 tandem trailer it has a coupling that had hydraulic brake gear on it once. It says 2000 Kg on it is that strong enough? the coupling is held on by one allan screw and moves around.
I saw a complete coupling set up with hydraulic cylinder for sale on ebay for $90 but it was also 2000 Kg.
I'm in VIC does a tandem trailer need brakes? If so it only has backing plates on the front axle is this ok?
I want to carry a few sheep in it and firewood etc

If the trailer has no brakes, then by law, the trailer including the weight of what you're carrying cannot exceed 750kgs so yes you will need brakes if you want to carry more weight.

A 2000kg coupling is exactly what you're after for a trailer of that size as, to go over 2000kg requires brakes that will automatically come on if the trailer detaches itself from the tow vehicle when in motion.

And only having brakes on front axle is not uncommon at all.
    Cheers
