OK... from what I gather from the last offerings, you want to turn your old camper chassis into a tinnie/canoe trailer.

Top idea. Won't need to change the wheels, use it as is. Maybe extend the drawbar.

Let's just get this one done first, eh?

How far do you think I can throw a brick? Strewth.

The frame's up and bolted to the shed wall as of this arvo with the help of Skew. But he's a cruel bloke like I just PMed him. He's given me a great idea and there's one bit that got me in a head spin. I should payed more attention in tech drag, had I've done that it be easy.

Okay yous blokes!!! settle down its time to get back into it alright? bloody slackers talk about a long smoko

Okay so I gots me some greese and were ready to rock and roll again!!... I went out there for quick stickybeak tonight and remembered the measure thing so found me ubloodybeaut measurin stick an a nice ubeaut big builders square thingy and measured as Yon Young Yonnee the lad suggested and both sides from tip of threaded end to centre of the plate equal dead smack on 9 3/4in so I guess theyre accurate enough eh!

So tomorrow? Well I guess first things first... check the weather? If all good then run the lead and set up to first drill the holes for the fitting of the tow hitch then bolt that on... then... THEN!!! Why then we get stuck into the hub side of things dont we? Yes indoodydoodydoo we sure do! Then a bit of clean up a spray of gal paint and whack the wheels on and drop it to the deck... done and over!! WHABLOODYHOOOOEY!!

So all going well should have me a subframe by tea time tomorrow... lunch if Im feelin extra energetic

Will do a check back a few pages before I start and print of anything that I might have missed but right now I cant really think of anything... all done barring the hubs and tow hitch... I think????

Anyway will take a few weeks off from this after that... god I NEED to do some WOODWORKING NOW!! and I reckon Im right to get into it now... been great for the old motivation and inspiration this subframe great idea thanks be to the noddy who came up with doin it!! FLAMIN BOTTLER!!!

Okay that was just to wake yous mob up after your nice long smoko!

    Cheers
    Shane

I know I know I tend to get a tad exhuberant when one of the nippers pops one outta the oven

Okay so did I actually manage to get into the shed you ask... why yes!!! Indeed I did for all of half an hour but managed to finally remove the ring things from the hubs... and started to install the new ones

Thing is... ... yeah always a "thing is" eh!

Anyway thing is... how the bloody blue blazes am I meant to belt the damned thing in till it hits the place its meant to seat?... Ive got the first one (large) down to flush with the outside of the rim of the hub but how the hell do I get it any further? Its as tight as a nuns butt!!... belting it with the wooden mallet it only goes down to as far as Ive gotten it but I dont think Im meant to belt hell out of the steel pin Ive been thinking of using... must be something Im missing?

Oh and Ive belted it in DRY... as per instructions given this bit goes in dry while the roller thing gets a FULL greese up... but its bloody tight so what do I do to get the sodding thing down to its seat? Do I gotta make buy steal of beg a special tool or something?

Cheers from the happy poppy in the far west!

Another little bundle to make you feel younger than you are, or is the other way around?

it's definitely younger because you get to play with toy cars and building blocks etc. without getting in trouble.

You can use a steel drift / pin-punch if you're very careful. But you can't just belt the crap out of it though, you need to tap it one at a time on opposite sides of the cup. It will slowly make its way down and "seat" on the bottom.

If you have access to a metal lathe, you could turn up a tool to do the job, or a bit of hardwood on a wood lathe...?? But by the time you mucked around making a tool, you'd have them done. Ask the joint you bought the stuff from if they have a tool to do it.

I've used a short length of copper water pipe with one end hammered flat as a makeshift drift for seating bearing cups. It's not as good as a solid brass drift, but the fact that it is soft means you have to take it nice and slow and just keep tapping around and around and around till it seats.

It's good as you'll bugger the drift before you stuff the bearing cup; if you slip, you are not going to do anything to case hardened steel with copper!

ah mmmm yeah okay no wukkers BUT!! Mate... this is ME yer yarnin too!!!

So anyways... I got a bit of time today and after Id done the way over due house work (you know dishes washing sweeping floors that stuff ) I wandered out to the shed to see what I could get up to

AND!! Well after swearing searching swearing some more muttering cursing fuming spluttering and other such carry on I decided (ahem I accept full responsibility but blame fully the quantity of amber fluid that had passed my lips for the following ) to just DO IT!! and be done

So the fuming was due to NOT being able to find ANYTHING that could remotely be imagined as brass copper or other such soft metal to use to belt the things home with... so I grabbed up a... no I better not tell yer otherwise you might reckon Im a bit of a tool an me reputation will be shot to bits... and anyways the cups (I think?) were sent home and finally ended up nice and hard in their seating position

Then I grabbed up the new container of water resistant grease Id bought during the week and SLATHERED THE HELL out of the larger inner bearings and sent them home to rest in position then came the first moment of truth... slid the hub home... mmm okay then thats a bit sorta weird but what the hey keep goin Shane she'll be right no wukkers ol fella intait again

So slathered the by jumminees outta the smaller outer bearings all up used 1/4 the container!! lovely jobbie that one and sent the first to its home... and then the washer and nut tight... back off... give the hub a few spins... then send the pin through and half fill the cup and whack that buggar into place... gave it a few whizzes good one henry!!

Sooo... grabbed up a wheel and fitted it to the hub... Gave it a whizz... FLAMIN RIP SNORTER!!!

And then attacked the second hub... done... chucked the wheels on... flipped the trailer over right side up and... end result??

    CHECK IT OUT!!!

Whacha reckon?? All thanks go to everyone whos helped with this build yer bloody legends!!

Left to do?... Will drill and bolt the tow hitch on hopefully sometime tomorrow... then give it a test run behind the Prado... finally get a tin of spray paint and give it a nice coat of some outlandish color and bobs yer uncle... then out of the shed with it and set up the engine crane and block and tackle move the tools to one end of the shed... set the camper up get in there and drill out the pop rivets that attaches the camper to the existing subframe... then back her in lift her up off the frame and pull that sucker out of the way... then get a 8x4 sheet of marine ply (probably 1/2in or even 3/4in) put some nails through in line with the new frames rails then run it back under the camper and slowly lower it down onto the nails... then lift it again drill the holes through both the marine ply and the camper and into the steel frame grab some tek screws and lower the camper into place on the marine ply and tek her together!! EASY AS!!! ooh then theres just a small matter of making sure the kitchen setup is made up to fit or modified to do so... run the lead... install some fold up stabalizing legs and fabricate a box for the front (storage and gas bottle) and its done and Im outta here!!

    Cheers

Shane you didn't mention the Back seals on the hubs but being the smart fella you are I know thats not them sitting on the bench still............ I hope.

Good work mate lick a paint and a screw here n there

Shane I know your using ply thats well water proof but a coat with a pitch on the under side wouldn't go astray it will help protect it especially between bearers and floor apply enough to ooz out stops the water sitting between and causing dry rot etc

If not pitch a good silicon sealer

If not pitch or sillly cone, use Bote Cote or similar 'pox. If it keeps water out of ply in a boat, it should keep it out of the ply under the camper
    Cheers
