Default Teardrop caravan build, need advice fitting springs...

G'day folks, I have started building a teardrop caravan and so far, have the walls/profiles cut out and sanded to shape, the floor is built and fits perfectly on the chassis, and I'm about to weld some eye to eye springs on it. The axle centre has to be 33" from the rear. That's probably a bit too far back for your average 8x5 box trailer, but most of the weight is in the rear on these things, being virtually a queeen size bed in a wooden cabin with a kitchenette under the rear hatch. My problem is i am not sure how to line the springs up before I weld them on. I measured 33' from the rear both sides and then measured back to that mark, from the front on both sides. I noticed about 1.5 mm difference, so evened them up. I used my square and centred the bolt through the springs to my mark @ 33', and made sure the bits ya weld on were square to chassis on both ends of the spring before tacking on, but only on one side. Now trying to line up other spring exactly the same, I am having difficulties. On close inspection with a square and rule, one can see a few variables causing this, including paint runs!. I have marked a centre line from front to back to run a string line to fit the A-frame after I fit the springs, and wonder if I should be measuring out to each side from there, or what!!. I basically need to know what has to measure up and where! Any help much appreciated. Jim. (my "phone a freind" must out on the turps tonight!)

    Default Caravan springs

The most important measurment is to have the same measurment from the centre of the tow coupling to the same point on either side of the axle. eg the very out most point of the axle. If your frame is a little out of square using this method will keep the van in line when towing.

G'day Rowley, thanks for that mate, as there is a slight difference in the pair they didn't turn out in precisely the same position, meaning looking from front to back along the chassis I could see one was leaning out a bit, so I have just cut those tacks off and tacked a couple of pieces of scrap to the side of the chassis so it runs up near where the axle bolts up, and a clamp has pulled it into position, though one bracket has a couple of mm gap under one side. So I guess I will put a nice hot root run in there and cap it with a run or two, if that doesn't work, I'll be able to get hold of my parts supplier tommorow who should be able to sort me out, hopefully without a slap up the ear'ole!! Thanks again Jim.
