    Default Towbars

How interchangeable are towbars between different vehicles?

My daughter has a new car and wants a towbar fitted. I have two pensioned off vehicles both with towbars. At least one of them is a Hayman Reece. Is it feasible to transfer them?

The new vehicle is a Toyota Corolla. The old vehicles are a Mazda 626 and a Mazda 929.

I am guessing that the bars themselves are fundamentally the same but come with a fitting kit to suit individual models. If this is the case are fitting kits readily available? I would appreciate any comments or help on this subject.

    Unfortunately it aint that simple..
Tow bars can change considerably between the same car with different build dates..
Its not just a matter of changing the "Fitting kit" tow bars are vehicle specific !!!

Unless two makes, or even different models of the same make, are made on exactly the same platform, then it's highly unlikely that a towbar from one car will even go close to fitting another. Even a towbar from a 70's Corolla will not fit one 20 years younger. Mounting points will be different, clearances to fuel tanks, exhaust and bumpers will also be different, even the angle and height of the tongue will be different.

Add to this the fact that towbars have their own ADR catagory, requiring them to be tested and marked to suit a specific vehicle, makes it not legally possible to even modify a towbar from one car to fit a different make or model of car.

    Thanks Strom and Yonnee

I was afraid you were going to say that but I was ever hopeful. The last time I made a towbar (in the days when we were allowed to around 30 years ago) it was for a small truck.
