New trailer problems
Hi all,
I have a trailer which I brought new for $2200 about a year ago from a local reputable trailer maker.
It has been suffering from the paint bubbling due to rusting, the pictures show the story. The inside seams in the pics I have applied rust converter.
I have taken it back and showed them for which they have told me that the trailer was treated with "some great rust proofing and the reason it was rusting was due to not being tacked enough underneath.
The trailer was left there for a week so they could tack the bottom up and retreat the effected areas again.
After receiving it back and inspecting it, the rust still looked rusty and most of the welds were blow throughs and not finished off. I phoned the builder and questioned him about the treatment. I thought the rust turns black after treatment but he said no not necessarily.
I also sanded some of the paint and found patches of rust underneath. I believe its made from rusty black steel.
I really don't think I should be having these problems with a 1 year old trailer. Do I request to have this trailer sand blasted and repainted? Is that reasonable. I feel that they wont come to the party. What can I do if they dont?
Cheers
-Craig.

That looks about par for the course in my experience of trailer assembly - typically no prep, just spray a thin coat of enamel onto hot rolled sheet and a quick blast of underbody sealant underneath and roll it out the door.
But $2.2k seems a bit on the pricey side - you could get a galvanised tilt tray trailer for that much.
