Default 3 MTR Hardwood Book Case

Hi all, this is biggest project I've taken on! I'd built some fighter fish tank stands for my sons pet store. One of the sales rep also a part time Vet, spotted them and wanted a book case and buffet made in the same style. The deal was done, this is progress so far. The timber was from my step daughters house that was built in the sixty, I've stored the time since it was demolish a few years back. Recycling hardwood my favourite thing!
After a lot of work with the thicky the frames were cut to size, glued and dowled
I decided to make it in three pieces to make up the 3mts wide, with a base and crown. This would keep the weight manageable. The shelves are 380mm deep, as some of the Vet book a quite big. This style won't be fine wood working, but poses a few challenges already. Especially working with something this size.image.jpgimage.jpg

My iPad show these photos, the right way up, not sure how to rotate once on the thread. Any help or direction? Manage attachments doesn't have a rotate button??

You have to do the rotation in a graphics program BEFORE you post the images, then save the rotated image in the graphics program (been there, wasted a lot of time by not saving the result )

Do a search for 'Irfanview' - its a small basic image editing program that will allow you to rotate pictures as well as reduce the size and number of pixels per inch, both of which make the file size smaller and easier to post. Its main advantage is that it shows the image in real time, rather than making you take a blind stab at it (like some other programs & then you find you have stuffed it up & have to start over).

Progress with the book case, built the middle frame to size, rounded the edges on all frames and rebated for the mini orb, that needed little chisel work to complete. Finish prep for the first few coats then sanding as i went.I wanted the mini orb inserts to be professional cut, but had to rely on a straight bit of timber, some clamps and the angle grinder. The price to have water cutting done was super expensive! Next is planing out the shelfing, as it won't be straight and uniform, across all three frames.

Bsrlee, thanks, will save me the trouble. I down loaded the program but loaded itself up in documents, and not as an app. Will get my SIL to look at it next time he brings the grand kids over.

image.jpgA little more done, used marking tape to set out the shelf's, what's worked out on the sketch pad, sometimes dosen't look right once in place. But I'm happy with the final set out. The box in the middle will provide a place for a lamp, a vase or an open favorite book. I've used tallowood T&G flooring as the shelf's, offers a good contrast to the hardwood.

I love the rustic look of this project and the corrugated iron gives it a real Aussie feel. Nice workspace you have there too.

Can I suggest "paint.net" for sorting your photos b4 posting? A great free download program and easy to use. Keep up the good work.

Spent the weekend finishing of the shelf's, then got start on the box for the middle frame, didn't want to use the floor boards as they have flutes underneath. So cleaned up some old hard wood built the frame with mini orb, but when I brought the too together, it just didn't look right. Back to the drawing board, pity feel like I've wasted my time in the shed, without being productive.

Thanks for your comments 3TS, I down loaded an app for the iPad, working OK so far. The work space is 10 x 6 mts, lots of space for projects this size!

Looking good Jason. There's nothing worse than that feeling when you think you're making good progress only to realize it's wrong or it doesn't work, especially when shed time is limited. All part of it I suppose. At least now you know what doesn't work

Good to see all the photos are the right way round, much easier to look at

    Peter

Progress on the B/S so far, unwilling to let the floating shelf idea rest, I redesigned it and i'm quite happy with the result, more mini orb inserts will be used to complete the box. The first coat of poly for the shelf went on. I've not owned a dedicated ROS before, so sanding the shelf gave me a great excuse to buy one. I decided on the markita BO6030, it's great very happy with it. Hooked up the 1 HP dusty it took care of all the dust, kept the surface very clean.

Hi All, this is the finished product, only taken four months! I completed the mini orb for the floating box, installed the partition's, I cheated I little with these, with cypress pine and choc walnut stain! Plus pine lining boards for along the top of the crown, again with the choc walnut stain. This has been a challenge due to the sheer size and weight moving them around. Once installed I'll be due for a little rest! I hope to have photo's to share in its final spot.
    Cheers Jason

Great job, Jason, and good to see some timber put to use that would normally end up at the tip!

Thanks 3 toes, installed on Sunday, with a satisfied customer. Fitted like a glove the colours blended really well, against the brick wall.
    Thanks all for looking.
