Default Advice on Murphy Beds and Australian Hardwood Wanted!

    Hi all,

I've bought a Lee Valley Murphy Bed kit and would like some advice on which easily sourced australian hardwoods to use for its construction. (from either Matthew Timbers or Australian Furniture Timbers)

From rummaging around the Big Stuff! section, I see a variety of hardwoods being used for beds, from jarrah to rosewood to gum to cedar to mahogany, etc.

As I don't have any experience with making anything in this scale, I am not sure what would be a suitable hardwood that would be able to withstand the forces, but at the same time is not overtly dense so as to not weigh too much.

For reference, the plans that Lee Valley/ Veritas have for that kit recommends 3/4" thick plywood for the bed rails and the side panels the bed rails pivot (on the murphy kit) about.

I'll appreciate any thoughts on this matter.

    Thanks,
    Nick

Hmm, one wonders if i should have posted it in the main Woodwork - General forum. Seems to be significantly less traffic in here!

Happy to take any stray thoughts!

You can put up a msg there pointing to this thread to cast the net wider.
Personally I haven't heard of a 'Murphy' bed
    Cheers,

Paul, maybe your not old enough to remember but the 3 Stooges used a murphy bed as a prop many times, usually someone kept getting trapped.
Nick, I think anything will work, especially for the single. The hinge plate looks big enough to spread the screw loads. Is there a mirror option?
    Cheers, Bill
