Default Advice requested: Outdoor table build

    Hello WWFers!

I am in the process of building an outdoor dining table from Sugar Gum. Dimensions will be approx 2350 x 1050, and I'm using 2350 x 190 x 43mm slats of Sugar Gum.

The weight of the timber is approx 110 -140kg by my estimate.

The plan is to use some prefab steel legs (SS210W2 Trapezoid Dining Table legs, Wide Top, 1 Pair 71 X 71cm - Taylor's Collection), however I haven't yet decided how to pin the slats together.

My first thought is to use 4 flat steel bars, something like a 75mm x 6mm flat bar, recessed into the underside, however I don't know if it will hold the slats together while its being moved around. Using mild steel would make it easier to drill slots for the fixings wide enough to accomodate some movement of the timber.

Is this likely to work just fine? Am I overthinking this? Am I missing something?

    Please halp!

    Hi timelord9,

When you say slats, will they have a gap between them or be hard up against each other like floorboards? Being an outside table, the wood will swell and shrink with the seasons and humidity.

    Cheers

Thanks Bryan. There will be a 5mm gap between slats.

I’ve also purchased the 5x65mm flat bar, so I’ll yell out on the “fallen can’t get up” forum if it fails.

Maybe breadboard ends would add some strength to the table top.

    Cheers
