Default Affordable timbers for general furniture

I'm looking to make a couple of desk drawer units for myself and my wife. nothing fancy, but solid wood exterior, 3 drawers with the bottom one being a filing drawer.

Fairly inexperienced in the 'what wood to use & where to get it' department so I was thinking to use vic ash / tas oak, but keen to take on any input anyone may have on this.

Im based in melbourne, and the best source I've found for dressed vic ash is 135x19 @ $6/m - Im going to need about 16 lm per unit

Try Briton Timbers and Uptons - both are usually quite competitive on price with reliable quality for select grade.

That’s a very reasonable price, I buy 65x19 a fair bit and pay about that much. Quality can very dramatically with vic ash/tad oak, perhaps all timbers. Look up DomAu on this forum to see his work from F17 kdhw.

Be careful buying wider tas oak boards, I got caught out because the material I bought (cut to length) were narrower boards jointed and the colour and grain changes were very noticeable. Where I am I don't have much choice without a drive of a couple of hours each way. I would have been better of buying from Bunnings and jointing myself.

If you have a planer and jointer and some patience, consider gumtree and this forum marketplace. I buy packs of timber occaisonally and there are some good prices to be had (and some rip offs).
