Exclamation I am shocked. Shocked I say

    I'm new to cutting wood.
Is this what one should expect of Pinus Radiata?

I ripped this 2m length of pine on my tablesaw, and it instantly assumed those conflicting bows. I can squeeze the two together with one hand, but only just.

I shaved the arris off a few other lengths with no untoward happenings.

PS That image is 600x800, too big for the forum software which limits images to 800x600, so I've placed it on my own site. Oh, it's fuzzy because the exposure was 1/6 seconds, hand-held, no flash.

John, as I explained here, max width is 800 max height is 600. Your width is 600, so OK, however your height is 800, too big.

On top of all that, you can't exceed 100k, or it won't allow the picture either.

So, to get a postable picture, set your max height for a vertical/portrait format photo to 600 and you won't be caught by the vBulletin software

Yep that's about right, it's also called twistus radiata. you've released some inbuilt stresses. Take heart it also happens with expensive timber too.

    cheers

    This happens occasionally.

It was dried too quickly, the inside was left in tension while the outside was left in compression.

When it was one single piece, the compressive stresses on both edges cancelled each other out.

When you ripped it in half, you created an 2x2 that had compressive forces on one side and tension on the other. It then just bent to match (technical term is 'spring')

This phenomenon is called case hardening of timber.

    Cheers,

    Is the process reversible?

I've had that pine in my shed for a year, if I let it sit there longer, will it improve?

How do I avoid this in future?

I contend it's a bug in the software. The image is 90k, and the number of pixels is the same whether 800x600 or 600x800.

Nobody should have any problem viewing either these days.

    Typical of Radiata Pine.
One mill that I know of used to mill & pack it as soon as it was cut, then spray the packs with water until it left their yard so that it didn't dry out and deform until it went out. Nowadays, they pack it in plastic for the same reason. I suspect that most mills do this with radiata.

I milled the pine for my house dressed the faces then cut to ~length and flicked it with a sting line and ripped with the table saw (should have just recut with Lucas) then dressed edges. The chippie was twisting the first board from side to side. I said it should be straight he said it is "so what's the trouble" We put all the spring in the same direction " don't bother they are all straight" He was shocked he had never seen straight pine before. We had 1 - 8" x 2" that wasn't able to be straightened I was going to buy a replacement but was told you could not buy one that was any straighter.

And if you used software to rotate the picure 90 % then your 600x800 becomes 800x 600 and then there is no problem.

Rather elementary I would have thought.

The wood might be dead but it hasn't got the brains to realise it should stop moving.

    Peter.
Not so good for the readers turning their heads on side to read the label on the Titebond bottle.

Maybe not so critical this time, but I hate trying to read stuff in the wrong orientation, and I don't like broken software either.

Fortunately, DJ's Timber has isolated and fixed the bug.
