Hi CH,
What a great looking table, and a whopping 2.8m long. Very nice. Love all the pics.
Cheers

Hey Guys, very happy with the way this one is going, very simple design but should look pretty sharp. Got some finish on the legs today and in the process of getting the breadboard ends on.
Will post some pics tonight.

Todays pics, first coat on the undercarriage, holes for dowels and pins in the end, glued dowels in the in the lower board and pins in the top, these coinside with a slot in the bread board end to allow expansion and contraction, glued and clamped. Tomorrow is just a few under top braces and more sanding. Maybe first coat if all goes well.

Very nice CH. Following the top construction with interest.

Nice stuff
G'day Claw Hama,
I checked out your website! You do some nice stuff and this table is no exception, however I have a serious aversion to breadboard ends and I think you know where I'm going. Anyway best of luck with it and keep up the good work.
Kind Regards...Oddjob1

The next commission should be 3.1 meters long and that may see you using different type of clamps.
Very good progress.

Hey guys, top construction is done, the major consideration is shrinkage. The last week has been very humid here, around 70 - 90+ %, the timber is sitting around 16-19%. I didn't realy want to do breadboard ends but with short thin timber to get the look the client wanted I didn't have any other choice. I have screwed a brace board accross the end of the boards on the underside of the top (and in the centre), the screw holes are sloted, the top is just on 1200 wide so there could be up to 12mm of movement. The board is cut 10mm shorter on each end so if the top shrinks it will not hit the side under-rails. The bread board ends are fixed to this under-rail (glued and doweled) the bread board end is also glued and doweled to the centre board on the top. All the outer pins on the top are then floating in slots. the breadboard ends were slightly bowed (as seen in one of the earlier photos) so when the centre of the board was pulled in it keeps tension on the outer ends. Hope you could follow all that
In antisipation of shrinkage and not expansion (due to the humidity) I have trimed the ends flush with the table top. If or when the top shrinks I may have to trim the breadboard ends for the client.
Christos, the next table next week is Australian Red Cedar and is 3.5m long I am going to thread the tail end of the pipes and use a gall threaded union to add some extension pieces to the clamps. Too easy and nill cost
These people have some young bubs that will be crawling and walking in the not too distant future so I have put some under table interest in for them. I have soldered panel pins to an old silver fork and butter knife and attached one at each end of the table on the underside just for fun.
Tomorrow is more sanding and finishing. Feast Watson Satin Floor Finish.

And the poor little tykes will be sitting under the table trying to pull the forks off - you're a cruel barsteward.
That or they'll be sitting under there staring at the forks wondering why the hell someone left their fork there.

Today was sand and put a second coat on the underside then once dry enough flip it over, sand and put the first coat on the top. So far so good.
