I-Beam bed
This is my solution to sagging bed slats. Each I-beam, 138cm long and 8cm high, is strong to support my weight. The middle slat is dovetailed.

Have you checked the mattress manufacturers spec re spacing of bed slats? I'm pretty sure the gaps need to be quite small.

They are 14cm apart and I reckon it is enough. I've made a couple of them for my children and they have not had a problem so far.

Interesting, a different way of thinking about this. Might be a little over engineered, but trying is in the proof of the pudding.

Well I don't think it is over engineered, not for a piece of furniture that you expect to last a very long time anyway.

A proper slat bed base is supposed to have flex (not sag) in the slats. They're usually bowed upwards and they deflect when you lie on them to allow the mattress to conform to your shape. They usually have a spine up the middle so that the two sides are independent.
The cheap ones you buy don't work that way and so your solution to that problem is probably a good one. It's really just a platform bed now but it has good ventilation, so that's a plus.
A man who has 3 children needs a solid workbench, I always say"I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."
