Thread: Bed build questions . . . and maybe a WIP!?

Cut the slat spacers from Camphor Laurel to help keep the bugs away but at just 32mm wide they don't add up to a whole lot of wood Clamped the rails together so there was no way I could stuff up the alignment of the spacers - Murphy visits here a lot

Just glued and pushed the spacers into place - couldn't see much point in clamping them

Pic 1 & 2: The support brackets couldn't have been easier to fit after a bit of a tune-up - found they sat together at a bit of an angle but a tap to each one with a cold chisel and hammer soon straightened them out

Pic 3: Dodgie pic of the rail brackets - will definitely be using these again on the next bed - easy to fit, tidy, strong and they have a hole in each piece that line up once assembled so you can drop a locking screw through it

Pic 4: All that's left now is to add the 'details' I'm working on and a few coats of finish

Lookin' good, TTIT - that's one of the few 'slab' pieces of furniture I've seen that I like! The way you've used the sweep of the sapwood/heartwood on the legs is what does it for me....

But dammit, man, you've put that together in a couple of weeks - slow down, will you, you'll set the standard way too high!

Finally found something to mark dark timbers like the Ebony and Gidgee that my dodgie eyesight can follow - Welders pencils - never seen them before but they are my favourite new toy at the moment
Pic 1: All the details marked out plus a few spares as the Ebony can have hidden cracks throught it .
Pic 2: First time I've used scrollsaw - borrowed from a fellow club member - bit of an experience but started to get the hang of it by the last couple .
Pic 3: Sized the details with a spindle sander mounted in the drill press so they would (roughly) fit the template which would also be used for placement when the details are glued on.
Pic 4: Rounded and shaped the pieces with the same spindle sander then took them a bit further with my BlowFly sander. Final smoothing by hand to 400grit - very sore fingers by the end of it

Pic 1: Picked up some El Cheapo tie-downs to attach to the slats (nowhere to buy webbing off a roll out here!). Was going to use staples but testing found they didn't stay in too well and I was worried about rust in the future so I glued the webbing on with epoxy - which didn't hold too well either for some reason Ended up gluing any that let go with CA and they seem to be holding OK now.
Pic 2 & 3: The details on the joined rails and legs - I'm probably the only one still worried about how the joins look

Used up the last of my Livos 'Linn' oil for the first coat then followed it with 2 coats of 'Kunos' - came up very nice and really popped the colour! I'll give it a final coat before I enter it in the show next year and hopefully find a buyer for it - if the little lady doesn't get around me in the meantime - I don't get it - everytime I mention selling it she starts with the dagger eyes

The pics aren't that great but our room is so small there was only one spot where I could fit the whole thing in the viewfinder!

The bed has turned out well, the detail distracts the eye from the join while maintaining the symetry of the grain in the board.

Nothing flash - just the annual Emerald show The club have use of one of the pavillions rent free on the condition that we run the woodwork competition which we love doing anyway. We run a Club Challenge each year at the same time with $1000 prize money and it includes a junior section to try and get more young ones interested. We even get a couple of entries from Rocky - want me to send you an entry form when we decide what it will be next year?!?

Bloody nice work there mate. You've pretty much taken the idea I have in my head for my own bed and made it real. Good to see what mine could look like if I can find the time to get started.
