Thanks for the advice there Hundred Miltrik, I'll give it some thought and maybe increase the gap by at least double.
Today I had a hand in the glue up from Kiwibrucee, I am glad he turned up as it was a bit of a bother and I am sure it would not have gone as well without him.
Header and footer are together but still need finishing and the mortises for the side rails.

As a result of the mattress purchased being a different size to the mattress that was originally discussed I've had to turf the original slats; they were 25mm short.
So I've taken the advice of a few people here and increased the spacing plus I have left them unfinished. To make them I cut to length, trimmed all the edges with a 2.5mm roundover bit, then lay them all on a table. Measuring in from one edge I screwed and glued a batten to every second slat to make a pallet. Then I flipped it over and screwed and glued the others in the same way.
This will make transport much easier as I can nest them together then pull them apart when it is time to assemble the bed. The photo from the top shows how they can be separated. A mark in pencil is on the slats in case it needs to travel again.

Double bed sizes are not standard apparently. The mattress we sized originally through Ikea was 40 mm smaller than the one purchased in Sydney. Go figure.

The frame is together at last. Since taking the pictures I've drilled and inserted the bed bolts to hold it together. Each rail has two 10x50mm dominos dry fitted to take the weight. Tonight I'll drill and attach the cleats which I've made out of 30x50mm Celery Top Pine. With any luck I might see it pretty much assembled later tonight.
The pole sitting on the top is the centre support beam which I can only cut to length when the frame is complete.
