    Default Bedside Book Shelf

Here's a little exercise that will hopefully keep me in a certain person's good books this Christmas.

The shelves are Pacific Maple, the dowels are Tas Oak and the frame is a Tas Oak/Pine/Tas Oak sandwich, just using up a few odd ends around the workshop.

Nice use of leftovers. That tas oak pine combo looks good.

    My thoughts too. Nice shelves.
I can see how the bottom one stays up.

Friction, basically. I'll watch over time and perhaps put a pin thru the end grain of the shelf into the dowels but I don't think slippage will be a problem. The dowels are a very tight fit and it was a matter of knocking the shelves into position with a mallet. I think the tung oil finish will also help to glue them in place.

thanks Burraboy. Personally I would put a nail through the dowel and in to the shelf, using a nail gun angled underneath the shelf, where no one would see it

Better to be sure than sorry later.

Whole thing looks really neat, well done!
    regards,

    Dengy

Some contrasting dowells/pins drilled through the end grain of the shelf and into the dowell would look good.

No, nothing special, two coats and lots of sanding before and between.
