    Default Bedside table

    Hey guys,

Bedside table build I completed recently. The inspiration was a dresser I caught in the background of a TV show.

Mocked it up in sketchup. The plan was to do a mitered dovetail carcass, sliding dovetail shelf, and angled half-blind dovetail drawer. I hadn't done any of these before, or even glued up panels, so lots of learning to be had.

The timber is blackwood and panels were made up from ~70x25 rough sawn planks. I glued them up in stages so I could run them through the thicknesser before the final glue up and hope they remained fairly flat.
Cutting the dovetails was the most straight forward bit as I have cut some before... Cheers to derekcohen, I made good use of his under bench drawers post on this forums when doing the mitered corners.

Unfortunately I didn't take many progress pics, so straight to the finish. The bottom shelf is a stopped sliding dovetail. At the back of the drawer blade is a single rail across the back which is also a sliding dovetail. On each side of this I cut a mortise, and the drawer runners have a tenon which slots into this with no glue, and the other end (towards the front of the drawer) is screwed into the side of the carcass with a single screw, to allow for movement.

The drawer has blackwood sides and a euro beech front, and a red oak ply bottom. As you can see the front face extends far past the bottom of the drawer and acts as the pull.

Overall pretty happy with it. The drawer sticks out 1cm past the back (oops) but hey, extra drawer space.

    Cheers

Kinda like the look of that. Slightly different but still traditional.
