Bedside Table Repeat

Over a year ago my eldest son made a bedside table in the workshop. Here it is, in NG Rosewood.

Several months ago he announced the need for a mate for this table, but he has been so busy he has not been able to make it into the workshop. It does not look like getting any better in the near future.

Yesterday he surrendered the fantasy and agreed to let me make the table for him. He dropped off the old one so I could copy it.

I really like this piece, and there are some subtle things he did to make it look elegant. The same router bit was used to shape the edges of the top and to raise the drawer front, but the chamfer is 21mm wide on the top and 16mm wide on the drawer front. The web frames are only 16mm wide. My son was trying to make the unit look a little lighter and more elegant, and it works for me.

I am off to FNQ this week, so the job won't start until next week.

Legs cut using the original templates, then sanded.

Then legs joined to aprons with floating tenons.

Next comes the two web frames.

Don't you love it when after assembly you check for square and the diagonals are less than one millimetre different?

Next comes the drawer.

Construction finished.

Now we wait for some decent weather so lacquer can be applied.

Couldn't find an exact match for the drawer handle which is pewter coloured in the original. The item is still available, but only in a bronze colour. Bought two so they can be matched.

I was drinking my second coffee when I looked out of the window and saw blue sky.

With the speed and grace of a thousand startled gazelles I was in the workshop spraying sanding sealer. Before the sanding sealer a coat of Solarez was used to seal the horizontal surfaces. It worked. No bubbles or pin holes. NG Rosewood is infamous for this type of problem, but the Solarez solves it.

Two coats of lacquer now on. One more to go.
