A few more photos from the build. A 6mm groove was added which the base slides into. The base is still not pictured unfortunately, but is a 12mm solid raised panel. The chamfer is on the bottom so the inside of the box floor is flat. I'll use 3mm veneered ply for the next model to make things easier and reduce overall weight.
I hate the handles on model 1.0, so these two have cut out handles. I like this option much better so far and the larger cutouts prove much more comfortable to lift what is still quite a heavy box (although not as heavy as the first one, which had 19mm panels for the sides).
My aim for the aesthetic is quality but 'no nonsense' if that makes sense. The last photo is the glued assembly sanded to 120 on the belt sander. Next up the 2 lids with a simple breadboard construction and routed handle.

Evan, you're 100% right. But, I can't see how it could be done on a hinge 800mm wide!
