    Default Buffet/Entertainment Unit

OK so in each project I try to set myself a challenge.

On this occasion the challenge was to make and entertainment unit out of premium pine cuts from the hardware store. (42x42 mm DAR, and 19 mm x 185, etc)

The art is in the design - apart from that I used mortice and tenon joints - and I glued up narrow stock to make the side and the shelves etc. Most of you will know how to do that, so I did not think that anyone would be interested in the step process.

One thing that I needed was doors that would allow the sound from the speakers to come through. Instead of glass or solid panels I used slotted steel mesh, which I fitted into a rebate on the back of each door. A bit too "see through" but still OK. I might put some blck cloth behind each mesh later.

There are still some finishing touches to make - Shelves for the speakers, beading for the rebate that takes the mesh, and drawer stops to keep them flush with the shelves... Fiddly things that I loose patience with.

The Unit is stained with Teak wood stain and finished in satin polyurethane. One day I will try my hand at oiling something.

Top effort mate, looks beautifully put together and well finished. Clean, neat lines.

Apologies for not posting a suggestion in your other thread for the door mesh, but had you considered a finer mesh. A while ago i made a buffet and fitted black stainless mesh used in security doors.
The gaps are smaller but would still let sound through. See here...https://www.woodworkforums.com/f187/khaya-buffet-board-90260

Also you could go to an auto audio installer and see if they have speaker cloth, i've used this before also.

    Again, great job.

    Steven.

Nice proportions on this piece of furniture. It certainly doesn't look like pine. You have done a good job with the staining.
    Job well done.

Hi Steven, thank you again for the post - Your buffet in African Mahogany is amazing! and - (how should I put it to save some face?) - in a different league to mine .

I really like the look of the slotted steel sheet mesh that I used. It was inexpensive, but had sourced from a metal merchant, cut, painted, etc, so there is a lot of work in it (ie it will not be thrown away!). There is a few mm left in the rebate behind it, so I might try the steel mesh that you used or something similar. That will keep the slotted pattern while providing some "opacity".

    Thank you for the comments.

Lovely work. I'll have to keep the Teak stain in mind as i use pine a bit & the colour has come up beautifully.

A nice unit. I quite like the look of the speakers behind that mesh. Heavy metal look.

Don't sell yourself short Jorge, your work is very neat and the finish very impressive.

I feel flattered that you consider my work in a different league, but the reality is that its not really. Some of the stuff others post on these forums most certainly is though.

If you were going to put something behind your mesh, I would put speaker cloth instead of the finer stainless stuff. Mixing the two meshes might look a bit messy.

Personally, i would probably leave it, looks good as is. (and it sounds like you quite like it anyway).

    Steven.

I was just reading your other thread which brought me to this one.

If you were going to cover the speakers then as suggested by Spokeshave,

Just a thought infront of the mesh could be an option.

    Hi GarciaJ

    Your unit looks really good.
A very nice job I'd say.
I also really like the steel mesh you've used.
And seeing the speakers through it looks really good.
I would even consider elevating the speakers to the level of the bottom stile of the door so you could see the whole speaker.

    Cheers and very well done

Thanks Frank, The job is not entirely finished. A shelf to support the speakers a little higher with perhaps an internal drawer to take some extra CDs is still on the list of things to do.
