Thread: Building Wegner's "The Chair" .

Well done Derek ! And thanks for posting the progress.

Just by coincidence, I saw this ad in one of our local mags over the weekend. Although the bloke seems to be trying to discern the chairs' secrets by means of hypnosis, he has a decent collection of 'the chair' and similar.

So as you eased your body into this chair, with a glass or cup of appropriate celebratory beverage in hand, did the trials of the journey give way to the triumph of arrival?

A heroic effort - I would have given up on the 'hand tools only & exact facsimile' stipulation at several points, myself, but you stuck to your vows. Congratulations!

I must admit I like them both, just wonder whether my bottom might not appreciate the upholstered seat tho

It was only at the moment that I lowered my bum onto the seat and put my entire weight (80 kg) onto it, that the chair became The Chair. I could not believe how strong and taut it felt. Keep in mind that this is the first chair I have built, and I really did not know what to expect.

And then I was amazed that it was so comfortable. My wife said that she could not tell the difference from the original. My bottom says the padded seat is softer, but my head says that the woven seat will bed in over time, and I think it is prettier. But I am biased!

Will I make more? Not this way! I may be a little touched but I am not nuts. The next piece is a chest of drawers for my wife. It will be different and a challenge. What other reason to do this stuff? Then I want to start on a Windsor chair or two.

After the Wegner, they'll be a doddle. Now your talking about chairs that are meant for simple construction - no weird finger-joints in the backs of those!

I thought you'd be graduating to something like chairs done with traditional Chinese joinery.....

I like the weaving. I think that was a better choice than the cushion. structurally too I suppose.

Congratulations on staying on track to the finish, and the very nice result.

I think your decision to change the seat to a woven one was a good one I have not tried Danish cord myself, I think it will prove as comfortable as cane which I have done and like. Where did you source the Danish Cord ?

Windsor's are also a nice comfortable chair and there are many styles to choose from. However, have you thought of putting your own mark on " The Chair " perhaps using Chinese joinery ( then you would not need to worry over which Glue to use ) Additionally reduce the scantlings to make the chair lighter and conserve wood.

The danish cord came from Wickerworks in Lonsdale: Wicker Works

They are the only seller in Oz that I know about.

Thanks Derek, There used to be many sources in Oz for caning supplies, I used a supplier in Sydney but they closed several years ago and I switched to a guy in Perth but I have been unable to contact him so I suspect he has also closed up.

I suspect that after " The Chair " you may find the simpler joints of the Windsors a tad boring. You will find lots of info and challenges in " Chinese Domestic Furniture by Gustav Ecke " Unfortunately the book has been translated into English so the challenges will be much reduced, although this may be offset with the difficulty of finding Ming period tools, which Lee Valley don't appear to have in stock .
