    Hi Paul

"Creeping up" has its pros and cons. A single saw cut is always going to end up straighter and flatter than a side that was pared with a chisel in several strokes. Several months ago I disagreed with an article about dovetailing in AWR magazine. It advocated sawing away from the line and then paring the remaining waste for both tails and pins.

Sawing to the line may seem the riskier option, however it also introduces fewer openings for error.

"Fine tuning" is not the same thing as "creeping up". Fine tuning may involve the removal of a wisp here-or-there, with a chisel, file or rasp. It does not form the joint; it only refines the joint.

Creeping up, nevertheless, can be a valuable method - in the proper context. I would not like to join two surfaces that have been prepared this way since there is much matching of one to the other that needs to be done. However, when one surface is true, it is easier to fit another by creeping up to it. That is what I am doing with the fingers here.

I do not have a problem using a jig to assist square sawing here as the tools are still handtools and the accuracy required is difficult to achieve owing to the shear size of the work pieces. Were the pieces smaller (e.g. dovetail size), then I would simply do it freehand.

A jig for paring square is another matter, for a different reason - I would not want to use a chisel to square up internal surfaces as there will is likely to be some breakout, and this may then show up when the parts are carved to shape. Using a rasp is far easier and leaves a better surface.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek,
I'd never taken note of this Wegner chap until you started this thread. After reading through it this evening, it turns out that the folding frame in the garage (which did a neat job trapping my fingers this afternoon), who's cord was chewed by a kitten some years back is a dead ringer! I'd better get onto re-finishing it
    Cheers,

    Hi BD

I love that folding chair! It has a wonderful line. A version of one is on my list.

    What happened to the kitten?

The chair was moved to the verandah, rats chewed the cords, the kitten got the rats, and then we rescued the chair! The cat is no more...

Before it was stripped for safety reasons, it was my hangover seat of choice. Most comfortable!

If you ever need dimensions and photos etc.

    Cheers,

    Default The fingers (pt 1)

I was tempted to wait another week before posting this part of the build. However it is two weeks since my last post and I had begun receiving email asking whether I had given up! Oh to have the time to be in the shop during the week! But I am back in my day job and it will be another week before I again get a chance to do anything, so here is the update - about 3 hours worth over this weekend past.

Since there is time, any feedback is welcomed, particularly with regard methods of transferring finger outlines.

    Regards from Perth

As a fan of Wegner, I would like to make one ( perhaps more ) and I would be very interested in some photos and dimensions of this chair, including the caning. The cane looks much heavier than the 2.5mm I use on my pieces (post #67 ), and the method of attaching the cane is not obvious on any images I have been able to find. I would much appreciate anything you can provide.

    Regards

The seat and back are woven cord on the folding chairs. I'll send the photos off this thread to avoid cluttering the thread (unless Derek would like them included?)!

    Cheers,

    Hi BD

I'd love dimensions and photos as well. Why not post them here - I'm sure others will be interested when they see the sweet lines and easy-ish construction.

I shall post on weaving Danish cord at some point.

    Regards from Perth

Will do! Just give me a few days (or so) to pull the frame from the racks etc.

    Cheers,

Derek, looks pretty damn fine to me
Do you find it calming or exhausting to have to concentrate onto a task for so long ... where you *really* don't want to make an offhand mistake?

Default The Chair - Towards the Round

It's been about 4 months since I last worked on The Chair. Life happens. All good - just very busy.

So I was back in the workshop this weekend, and here is a record of the work done. Lots of pictures and just enough description so you don't fall asleep
