Bush Poles
Hello All,
We are hoping to build a strawbale house(post and beam frame) and have access to red stringybark and yellow box trees. We plan on using one or the other for poles in the frame. We havent applied for a building permit yet, but we think the council will probaly approved the red stringybark. We assume the poles will have to be treated with some kind of preservative. Does anyone know what type of preservative that might be? We would prefer a organic type if possible. Also any advice on preparing the poles would be greatly welcomed!
thanks, Strawbale.

Certainly put the Yellow Box in the ground the stringybark will not last long in the ground. A friend cut off whole trees and put them in a drum of chromated copper arsenate (CCA). They took it up into their sapwood so it was a cheap way to treat the logs. This was in NT and the termites wouldn't touch them, with out CCA they were eaten away.
Where in Ballarat are you? I used to live in Ross Creek.

Hello Glenn K,
We intend to build on a concrete slab, so the poles will be bolted to the slab rather than in the ground. I dont think you can purchase CCA anymore as I believe it was taken off the market due to health concerns.
We live in Lake Gardens(the old Lakeside Hospital site) but we have a 3 acre block at Snake Valley.
cheers, strawbale.
