Default Where Do You Buy Small Quantities of High Pressure Laminate Sheet

    Greetings,

I'm just starting to put together some plans for a few items of workshop furniture (storage cabinets, light duty work benches, router table, and a few other bits and pieces. I would like to use a high pressure laminate sheet (glued onto a thick MDF substrate) for the router table surface, and the surface of the light duty workbenches.

But, I've run into a brick wall when it comes to finding a supplier who will sell me the laminate sheet material. The usual DIY suppliers such as Bunnings and Masters don't sell it. There are quite a few trade suppliers for Laminex and similar products, but each one (five so far) that I've contacted say that they are trade suppliers only, and with one supplier specifically saying that they "do not sell to the DIY market". (Note when reading that quote, if you want to correctly emulate the stuck-up salesman who said it, you need to bung on a posh accent and practice turning your nose up when looking down at people.) One place offered to sell to me, but only on the basis that any order I placed had a minimum value of $1000 ex GST.

So - does anyone know where in Brisbane (or elsewhere in South East Queensland), I can buy small quantities (say one of two 2400 x 1200 sheets) of Laminex, Formica, or similar high pressure laminate products ?

    Thanks,

    Roy

    Have you tried Parbury

    http://www.parbury.com.au/

If not them, try your nearest benchtop fabricator either for the laminate or they often have reject benchtops that they will sell at a reasonable price.

    Hi Roy
When I was working (Kitchen cupboards) we did a job for the boss's brother-in-law. He was a retired engineer and drew up a specification for work benches in his garage. He must have had a Laminex Catalogue because the benches we made had to be laminated in 2mm Super Dooper Laminex. This was maybe 20 years ago and even then the material was seriously expensive. I don't know how the surfaces performed for what he was doing in his garage. From memory it was a special order and it only came in 3600 X 1200 sheets.
Now after remembering to back when, would Lamipanel do what you are asking? It comes in 3mm thickness with sheet sizes being (from memory again) 1800 x 900, 1800 x 1200, and 2400 x 1200.
I seem to remember that looking at the super dooper stuff it looked no different to the usual laminex only thicker.
A cabinet maker should be able to get what ever from Laminex seeing how that salesman wouldn't oblige.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

My local secondhand building supplies place usually has a nice selection of laminex offcuts.

I am surprised at the response from the laminate supplier.

Bunnings also sell DIY kitchens - I am sure that they don't know what a pressure laminated sheet is, but they will probably know what a laminated kitchen benchtop is...

I bought a prefab made to measure kitchen from a place called DIY Kitchens working out of the gold coast. They delivered my kitchen in flat pack boxes to Canberra. I am sure they could arrange a Formica kitchen top delivered to SE QLD.

    Good luck
