First Cabinet
Hi Guys,
Medium time lurker, first time poster!
I thought I'd share this with you fellas, it's my first real attempt at a cabinet, and probably only my second attempt at anything since I was a teenager in high school.
I recently acquired a larger shed, and along with it a *lot* of unused woodworking tools, including a scheppach thicknesser, planer, table saw and a bunch of other gear.
We have an old 1880s front of house, and hence an old fireplace. What comes with that are 2 near useless spaces to the left and the right of the fireplace. Once it was used to store wood when there was carpet in here, but we put down floorboards and re-painted the whole lot with a view to put in a gas fireplace.
Anyway, long story short, I thought I'd fill the space with some baltic pine
Top is old old well used floorboards which haven't been thicknessed, only lightly sanded as I wanted the recycled timber look.
The rest of the baltic pine is a similar age (square nails) but was from a nunnery in Naracoorte SA (the boards were over an inch thick)
I used White Cypress Pine (decking) for the panels in the doors from bunnings via the thicknesser.
Anyway, here are the pics.. not bad for a first effort, however I need to work out how to over-come out of square / lumpy walls for the next one.

Nice cabinet! built ins are always somewhat harder than stand alone cabinets, if the walls are out of square it looks like you did a crappy job but in truth your the one who got it right!
Great work.
Show us the shed?

I'm a bit hesitant to show the shed... but here it is anyway
It's a mess. It's a converted carport (put a wall up, moved one forwards) and it's still half road base.
I only got the elec connected about 3 weeks ago, and I'm still setting it up. Moved a few things in the other week (drill press that's sitting randomly in the middle) and I'm yet to sort out a dust extraction solution (although I have one ready to pick up).
So little time in the evenings to do work, last thing I want to do at the moment is organise it, but it will happen!

Oh, and I just put another coat of estapol on the top, so it doesn't look as "ragged" now.

Got to start some where right?!
Better than me at the moment, i have all my stuff packed up in storage containers ready for a move in about 3 weeks or so and have been restricted to no machinery, bench, spray unit etc because of lack of power and space. So annoyed.
Shed will get there. You just need some lights in there to brighten things up!

Damn!
It will get there, I just need to put some time aside to clean it up some and move a bit of stored gear out of there.
Only have 2 banks of 2 mini flouros at the moment, I have another 4 ready to go up, but once again I haven't done it
Good luck with the move!

yeah, nice job indeed.
as mentioned already, it's always harder fitting a piece between walls that aren't square. i did floor to ceiling bookcase doors either side of my fireplace. a 1920's bungalow on bay of biscay soil never has real straight walls.
i love the colour variation in the timbers also.

Great work on the cabinet.
Also to mention, nothing wrong with your shed. It is not the shed that makes the items it is the person that makes the items.

Thanks guys I am pretty happy with it, definitely learned a lot.
Shed will get there, I'm not embarassed by it, just as a contrast to the neat 'n tidy that you blokes have it's somewhat of a monstrosity, but at least it looks used haha.

Gday Team Mckay.
Great first cabinet and real nice use of timbers. Inspirational stuff, imagine what you will be turning out in a year or two if thats the standard of your first cabinet.
Thanks for showing.
Cheers. Longwoody.
