    sorry to dig up a slightly older thread. I'm not sure how I came across reading this thread - probably as a result of searching for something and doing background reading.

    Anyways, I remembered Cam from Blacktail Studio's name being mentioned and while watching his latest video, he referenced one of his old videos for making DIY C-Channels. I've not watched it myself, but thought the OP and others may be interested:

    As other references (since I'm also keen to find an Australian stockist), these are two American sources:

    C-channel - Table Top Stiffeners (I think this is where Cam from Blacktail Studio gets his), and;
    C-channel table stiffeners | Integrity Furniture and Lumber | Alberta

    If anyone knows where to source these in Australia, please share. Many thanks!

    I agree with you and I think it's a silly idea.

    Regarding the 19% moisture content Ash table tops, I see two possibilities- either the timber curls as it dries and bends the steel channel, or the timber tries to curl but can't bend the channel and subsequently splits.
