Thread: Circular Huon Pine Extention Table

Good Luck ! I would probably make the extensions myself and have them fit as if you can imagine a pineapple ring cut into quadrants to fit around the main circle ! clear as mud? And i would probably go for a 3 legged table as i have seen to many pedestal tables come to greif by the weight and overhang of the top and breaks either the leg or foot of the leg. Look foward to seeing a plan.

I was actually thinking of a butterfly extension with a rectangular leaf that would make it an oval sort of shape.
but i have seen some of the tables you mention, and may consider it actually.

but any ideas on the extension mechanism for the butterfly?

i'm doing a few sketches of the table with various legs, pedestool, four legs, etc, and am really confused as to how to attach the legs to the carcass of the table, while allowing for the extention.
Any ideas or links would be great thank you

JM, Here is a small run down on an older style runner system, these pictures show the method used. Its a little model i made a while back and i hope it shows the action clearly for you or anyone interested.


The main runners, sections 1, 2, and 3 are usually 65 x 30 mm and best in a straight grain 1/4 sawn timber that is dry and stable. When cutting the rabbets do all three sections then adjust the saw/shaper a smidgeon (about 0.5mm all up) on numbers 1 and 3 and do an extra pass so when you glue in the long tenons both sides into no 2 they slide well. The trick is to get it very snug with "no" slop at all.

Make the runner section first and make sure it runs smooth as you possibly can. I will rub a small amount of paraffin wax along the tenons "after" its running smooth.

After you have completed the runners, place them as in the closed photo and attach securely to the table on one end each only. Section A to one end, and section C to the other end. Section B is not secured as it runs free.

On the bottom where you secure section A to the table you will need a small spacer around 2mm attached to the under side of the section B rail and 4mm under the section C rail so their is clearance when you extend the table out. Repeat the process on the top section in reverse.

Its pretty straight forward and i would suggest making a model like i have. No need to rabbet and tenon, just let it slide loose. Hope that makes sense


Also this will probably be more suited to what you are after. Its a Jerry Work pdf is a Domino manual, but right down the bottom is a brilliant explanation of a butterfly wing extension table. And you dont need a Domino, so dont let that turn you off looking.

Thank you sooo much lignum, made a lot of sense.
unfortunately i have turned away from the extension idea due a couple of things, mainly mum not wanting an extention, and she takes up a large part of my statement of intent.

However i have discovered a new problem outlined in my new thread, if you wouldn't mind having a look at it, that would be much appreciated.
