Sanded to finished shape and ready for top, which is yet to be made.

I like the simple elegant lines. These legs were much easier and quicker to make than the rounded variety with a foot. The difference is quite remarkable.

Close up of a seam between the leg and the apron. This is exactly the effect I was looking for. The top will be in end grain from the centre of the log.

Yeah. You do get funny looks when you do that in a museum or stately home!

    So I've noticed Graeme.

My crimes almost got me kicked out of a very large antique shop in New Orleans. The sales staff/management had a significant sense of humour failure. All I was doing was looking ... very closely.

The veneer I was planning to use was placed on top of the little table and it looked terrible ... the top had what seemed like a touch of reddish brown, but against the palish golden NGR it looked garish.

Decided to make the top a Veneer over a lipped 12 mm MDF panel which will have another 12 mm panel glued underneath that fits inside the aprons. The edges of the top will be tapered inward like the tops of the aprons ... about 10 degrees. The exposed edge of the lips will be the same surfaces as seen on the outside of the aprons (same piece of wood). The top veneer will be four triangles where the points meet in the middle (again, cut from the same piece of wood). I wanted the grain to look as if it was running up the sides and over into the top.

Now to make it and find out if it looks as good as I hope.

Almost ready for final sanding and then lacquer.

Decided to leave the edges of the top vertical after all.

    Finished.

I thought about making the aprons narrower when it was decided to drop the drawer from the design, but thought it likely a companion piece would be made ... perhaps with a drawer ... and I wanted them to be a matching pair.

If I were to do this again there are some other changes I'd make, but this is good enough. I still like it. I do like having all the grain on the sides running vertically.
