Default Advice on stitching horse wood please

Hi there, this is my first post, so here goes...
I would like to make a leather worker's stitching horse and I've drawn up the plans.
The pic below shows the design. This is made of Curly Maple.
I probably couldn't afford this type of wood, even if it were available in Oz
The dimensions for the seat are: 28" x 13" x 2". This is the largest component
and I want to make it special. Does anyone have a suggestion for a timber type
that approximates curly maple ?...Or a wood that you think would look nice
and is reasonably priced ?...thanks, bongo.

    Hi Bingo and welcome

I think we need your definition of reasonably priced.

If you were in Sydney, I'd be suggesting one of the Silky Oaks, or Queensland Maple or Blackwood.
In WA, you might lke to consider one of the sheoaks.

However, a nice piece of wood 2+" thick (so it finishes at 2") will cost a bit — you might have to glue two or three boards together to get the width you're after
My inclination would be to buy a 2" thick slab (or baulk) and all the components from it
    regards from Alberta, Canada

Hi, I see that you are registered as being in Perth. 18 months ago I was visiting over there, and my daughter in law took me to Carbatec They have a large range of timbers down the back of the shop past all the machinery, Cant remember the area, but you can look it up in yellow pages, I'm sure they cut to size but the prices I don't know , but it may be worth your while to take a drive over there, Just checked Carbatec catalouge their phone number in perth is 1800886657. hope this helps CD.

Hi guys and thanks for the quick reply. Ian, you're quite right, as a disabled pensioner, "reasonably priced" to me means something quite different to someone with a steady income. In my case I'm thinking between $100.00--$120.00 for the seat. Am I being optimistic ?
CD, thanks for the research on Carbatec. They're based in Balcatta and they look like a good bet.
I really would like the seat to be one piece but will keep an open mind to alternatives.
    Once again thank you....bongo

Dereck Doak the timber bloke in Henderson might have something for you. He has a good reputation over that side of the world.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.
