Oh, hey, I subscribed to this thread so I could re-read it when it was time to make my own, as I really like the idea.
But... opened to read... it's like someone's ripped out the last page!
Where's the finished cupboard???? Did you ever finish it?Cheers, Richard

After a long hiatus work on the tool cabinet is again progressing. Here are some photos of the door assemblies, plane storage and drawers that I've done since last time I posted. Just waiting on a router bit to finish the upper bank of skinny drawers and finding more old-growth pine stock to do the bottom drawers and drawer fronts.
It's pretty much to plan however I think the chisels will now be fitted into the drawers and that will be taken to the bench when needed. I didn't like the idea of having all their business ends exposed on a rack.
Probably the main problem I will have is filling it, there is so much space!
Just to recap the design I'm working to:

The doors are halfblind DT to match the carcase:

How it looks on the outside. Those are single hoop pine boards!

Bench plane storage:

Left side who knows yet? (Err, that's the other left)

Upper bank of thin drawers, for holding marking, measuring, bits, chisels etc etc:

I've been looking at kerbside collections ever since!
I saw the cabinet last week, and those hoop pine panels in the doors must have come from one big tree. I like the idea of a range of sizes of drawers.
I find it hard to believe you'll have a problem filling it!Cheers, Richard

It's looking good
just stop playing with our minds!
is it "left" because it's on the left, or "left" because it's the bit left to do ??regards from Alberta, Canada

I did wonder about Kauri also but could not see enough detail in the pics. Kauri was certainly used in a lot of old furniture and I woyld not be surprised if that is what you have.
I picked up an old disassembled cupboard at the tip for $5..Nice wide, single piece boards that I think are Kauri - beneath the paint.
