    Default New Corner Joint

    New Leg Joint 1.jpg

Have I invented a new three way corner joint?

    Kinda but not really, sorry

It's just a variation on the "Triforce joint" (named after the symbol in the Zelda video games that appears in the mitred corner) that has the diagonal face cut 1 unit further back

    Still cool though

Well spotted, Elan, and well analysed.

I first saw the Triforce Joint in a debate many years ago as to whether it had Japanes origins. I think not because it relies on glue. I was attracted to it because it is so incredibly simple to cut and looked so cool, to quote you. Just three identical pieces of timber each with two cuts - a lap-joint and an open mortice.

But if you look carefully at the middle triangle on the slope in your example the grain does not line up. A plug has been glued in. (Arrowed)

This is a weakness or a design feature of the triforce joint. I tried to avoid it simply by enlarging the size of the corner bevel.

In doing this, I unexpectedly added to the visual complexity of the joint, and, marginally, simplified its construction.

It looks far more complicated than it is.

Tried another variation on the triforce joint - taking it further down the leg. Don't think it looks as intriguing as the first version.

Are you going to release the Secret Sauce?

The image of the single element/leg?

Interested as Im doing a number of Japanese joints at the moment. There are a couple similar, but yours looks unique!

Is this what you want, WP?

    Leg Component.jpg

Just three identical pieces glued together as per my second last past above.

It is not unique; just derivative to give a slightly different aesthetic and to remove that fill in "plug".

You have nailed it. But Elan called it a Triforce Joint, so let's stay with his terminology.

I tried another variation, extending the bevel face even further down the face. I think its a bit of a dog's breakfast, and a void has opened up in the middle of the bevel face. Logically it is in my first version, the one you drew, but invisible. It is visible in my second version, but I did not realise that it was there.

I much prefer my first version, especially in that its construction is not immediately obvious; it sort of plays with you perceptions. "It's not possible, but I can see it...?"
