Default Crown Moulding Visible from Above

I've got it in my mind to make a freestanding cabinet on legs, a la James Krenov. I'd like to include a crown moulding and skirting.

In this particular application, it's likely that the top of the cabinet will be visible for some, taller people. From what I can find online, crown moulding is most commonly used in applications where it is so high you can't see above it. Things like tallboy dressers, around the top of walls, and at the top of wall-mounted cabinets.

Has anyone done much work which involves the crown moulding terminating at a surface which is visible, maybe even usable, from the top? If so, can anyone show photos of that work, or perhaps some thoughts or diagrams on how best to execute this?

What I want to avoid is having a large recess at the top of the work which is bounded by the moulding.

I've got some ideas. There seems to be a bit of information about including the final ovolo, cove, or rebate of the moulding in the top so that it blends into the rest of the moulding. I'd imagine this will end up being the route I take but I'd like to learn a bit more about it, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

In case it's relevant, this will be a complex, custom moulding cut by hand using hollows and rounds.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Cheers,
    Luke

Generally when you see an elaborate moulding at the top of a cabinet, its in contrast to the centre like so.

Do you want this crown moulding to blend into the top or use it as a distinguishing feature?

Cut a rebate in the top and drop a piece of veneer board in
